To subscribers to T. H. Huxley’s gift   [25 April 1873]1

(Private Circular)

The sum of £2150, subscribed by 18 of Prof. Huxley’s friends, was paid into his account on April 23rd. & 25th.2 On April 23rd., Mr. Darwin wrote to inform Prof Huxley of the fact, & he has this morning received an answer, of which the enclosed is a copy.3 As 17 copies could not be made within a sufficiently short time, Mr. Darwin begs the recipient to forward this letter & this circular to the person whose name stands next on the subjoined list—4

A copy of the letter from T. H. Huxley, 24 April 1873, was enclosed with the circular. Aside from minor changes in punctuation, the copy is complete and accurate; it is in DAR 99: 69–70.
The enclosure has not been found but for CD’s rough copy of the list of contributors, see Appendix V. The contributors were William George Armstrong, William Bowman, George Busk, CD, Erasmus Alvey Darwin, John Evans, Thomas Henry Farrer, William Henry Flower, Thomas Archer Hirst, Joseph Dalton Hooker, Henry Bence Jones, John Lubbock, Charles Lyell, James Paget, Herbert Spencer, William Spottiswoode, John Tyndall, and Joseph Whitworth.
