My dear Sir

I have called on you, to solicit your vote & interest at the Athenæum Club (if you ever attend the evening meetings)2 in favour of my brother, Erasmus Darwin, at the ballot on next Monday (7th).3 If you can so far oblige me, I shall esteem it a great kindness.4

The date is established by the date of the vote on Erasmus Alvey Darwin’s candidacy for membership of the Athenaeum Club, Monday 7 February 1842 (see Correspondence vol. 2, letter to J. F. Royle, [2 February 1842] and n. 1, and n. 4, below). The preceding Thursday was 3 February.
The balloting on candidates for membership of the Athenaeum Club was held between 9 and 10:30 P.M. (Ward 1926).
