From William Farr 27 February 1868
General Register Office | Somerset House
1868 Feb 27
My dear Sir
Rutland is our smallest county—& the proportions fluctuate from accidental causes—the extent of fluctuation varying with the numbers in relations which are expressed by a formula— given by the writers on probability. I enclose the numbers for Rutland—& will shortly send you the proportions for all our counties.1
I am my dear Sir | yours very truly | W. Farr
P.S. The Registrar General to whom I mentioned your striking facts about the sexes of racehorses2—inquired whether Mr. Darwin is acquainted with any known method for determining? He was told by a breeder that he possessed such a secret.
C. Darwin Esq FRS
