Darwin Correspondence Project

To John Scott   6 February [1864]1

Down. | Bromley. | Kent. S.E.

Feb 6

My dear Sir

Your paper was read at the meeting of the Linn. Soc. on Thursday last & Mr Bentham spoke afterwards “from the chair warmly in its praise” in warm commendation of it.2 Dr Hooker was unfortunately not able to be there, but he intends to read your paper in M.S.3

I shall write again before long.

I am yours faithfully | Ch. Darwin

Footnotes

The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter from J. D. Hooker, 5 February 1864 (see n. 3, below).
Scott’s paper (Scott 1864a) was read at the Linnean Society meeting of 4 February 1864. George Bentham was the president of the Linnean Society. See letter from J. D. Hooker, 5 February 1864 and n. 2.
Joseph Dalton Hooker had asked for the paper to be ‘referred’ to him (see letter from J. D. Hooker, 5 February 1864 and n. 2).

Summary

JS’s Primula paper was read at the Linnean Society and praised warmly by G. Bentham. Hooker was not present.
