I returned home on Tuesday evening & on Thursday I returned your M.S., with my letter, to Park Crescent, & there I have no doubt you will find it safe.—2 I shd. indeed be grieved if it were lost.—

The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter from Hugh Falconer, 3 October 1862 (Correspondence vol. 10).
In his letter of 3 October 1862 (Correspondence vol. 10), Falconer asked CD whether he had received the manuscript that Falconer had sent him on 27 September 1862. The manuscript was part of a paper on fossil and living species of elephant (Falconer 1863). CD commented favourably on the manuscript in his letter to Hugh Falconer, 1 October [1862] (Correspondence vol. 10).
