Darwin Correspondence Project

To A. G. More   1 October [1862]1

Down. | Bromley. | Kent. S.E.

Oct. 1st

My dear Sir

I am very much obliged for your satisfactory answers to my questions.—2

I am ashamed to say so, but if you are in the Isle of Wight, I shd. certainly be very glad to see the result of some more trials.3 The result would probably throw light on the use of the labellum in many exotic orchids.—

My dear Sir | Yours sincerely & obliged | Ch. Darwin.

Footnotes

This letter was first published in Correspondence vol. 9, transcribed from a copy on which the year is recorded (DAR 146: 407).
More’s letter has not been found. In his letter to More of 26 September [1862], CD asked for further details of the experiments carried out by More on the labellum of the orchid Epipactis palustris.
More lived at Bembridge on the Isle of Wight. According to his biographer, ‘unforeseen circumstances’ prevented the fulfilment of CD’s wish (Moffat ed. 1898, p. 158).
