Darwin Correspondence Project

To Nicholas Trübner   23 June [1862]1

Down. | Bromley. | Kent. S.E.

June 23d

Dear Sir

I have received a letter from Dr. Asa Gray this morning, who says “pray ask Mr. Trübner to send at once 12 a dozen copies of the (Darwin’s) Orchis Book.” (Murray).—2

Will you be so good as to attend to this—

Yours faithfully | C. Darwin

Footnotes

The year is established by reference to the publication of Orchids. See also letter to Asa Gray, 1 July [1862].
The letter from Gray has not been found. Trübner, a publisher and bookseller, frequently acted as Gray’s London agent (see Correspondence vols. 8 and 9). In addition to reviewing Orchids for the American Journal of Science and Arts (A. Gray 1862a), Gray was attempting to find an American publisher for the book, which had been published in Britain by John Murray (see letter from Asa Gray, 18 May 1862 and n. 3).
