I return the enclosed. It seems a most wonderful cure, & if all is really as it appears, what thousands of lives this precious doctor has cost by not revealing his secret.2

The date is suggested by the reference to Henrietta Emma Darwin’s illness (see n. 3, below).
The reference has not been traced.
This sentence was added in pencil. Emma Darwin’s diary for 1861 is full of references early in the year to Henrietta’s progress in recuperating from the illness she had been suffering from for many months (see letters to Asa Gray, 23 [January 1861] and to W. E. Darwin, [24 January 1861]). On both 21 and 22 April 1861, Emma recorded that Henrietta had a ‘good day’.
