To J. de C. Sowerby   12 September [1850]

Down Farnborough Kent

Sept. 12th.—

My dear Sir

The woodcut1 will now, I think, do very well: but please observe & take steps to rectify two errors in the spelling of the names of valves.— for upper lateral read Upper capital L Latus for cardinal read Carinal

Please direct all 4 blocks to be cut close for type.

I suppose it will not signify, but I wrote to Mr Bowerbank2 for instructions who shd. cut the block & suggested to him to leave it in your hands, to get done, & then the drawing & cutting wd be one charge: if any difficulty arises, I will let you hear.—

Though you had to pay only 1s/2d for the parcel I had an extra shilling to pay for porterage; but you will not have any other parcel to send, for, as I said, I will come up to London to compare the proof-sheets of the Engraved Plates, with the specimens.—

I shd be greatly obliged if you could inform me (when the time comes) as soon as you know on what day I shall have the proof-engravings, so that I may know a few days before hand when I shall have to come to London.—

There will be no use to send a proof of one Plate before all 4 are ready.—3

I am truly glad that you are making progress

Yours sincerely | C. Darwin

I must see proofs of woodcuts but the Blocks themselves had better be retained by you.—

Footnotes

Ultimately there were five plates. Tab. V illustrates Loricula pulchella (a synonym of Stramentum pulchellum), a species differing in several ways from every other known cirripede (see letter to N. T. Wetherell, 8 [August 1850]).

Bibliography

Fossil Cirripedia (1851): A monograph on the fossil Lepadidæ, or, pedunculated cirripedes of Great Britain. By Charles Darwin. London: Palaeontographical Society. 1851.

Summary

CD has two corrections in spelling on woodcut [for Fossil Cirripedia (Lepadidae)]. Has asked J. S. Bowerbank who should cut the blocks and suggested JdeCS get it done. Repeats arrangements to compare specimens and proofs in London.
