To J. J. Weir 18 September [1873]1
Down, | Beckenham, Kent.
Sept. 18th
My dear Sir
You are quite at liberty to honour me by putting my name down as one of the Patrons of the Cat Show;2 but let me advise you not to do so, as people may refuse to go & admire a lot of atheistical cats!
My dear Sir | Yours very sincerely | Ch. Darwin
Footnotes
The year is established by the printed stationery with the address in the centre (CD used this type of paper between January 1872 and November 1874), and the reference to the cat show (see n. 2, below).
Weir was among the judges and CD was one of the patrons of the fifth annual cat show at the Crystal Palace, which took place from 20 to 23 September 1873 (Morning Post, 22 September 1873, p. 3).
Summary
JJW is quite at liberty to use CD’s name as patron of cat show.
