John Burgoyne
1723–92
Army officer, politician, and playwright. Entered the army in 1737, rising to the rank of colonel after distinguished service in Portugal, 1762. MP for Midhurst, Sussex, from 1761; Preston, from 1768. Chaired investigation of the East India Company for corruption, 1772. Commanded British troops in America and Canada, 1775–7.
