George Vancouver
1757–98
Naval officer and hydrographer. Took part in James Cook’s second and third voyages to the Pacific. Appointed commander of the Discovery, 1790, surveying Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, the north-west coast of America (where he was the first European to establish the insularity of Vancouver Island), returning to England in 1795.
