John Russell, 1st Earl Russell
1792–1878
Statesman. Styled Lord John Russell from his father’s succession as sixth duke of Bedford in 1802. Home secretary, 1835–41. Liberal prime minister, 1846–52 and 1865–6. Foreign secretary under Lord Palmerston, 1859–65. Created Earl Russell of Kingston Russell, 1861. In later life, occupied with literary work. FRS 1847.
