Scottish physician. MD, Aberdeen, 1864. General practitioner in Lancashire. Pathologist at the Manchester infirmary from 1876. Best known for his work on diseases of the nervous system. Fellow, Royal College of Physicians, 1882. Professor of medicine, Owens College, Manchester, from 1887.
