Botanist. Draper in Thirsk, Yorkshire, 1847–64. Active in the Thirsk Natural History Society. Assistant in the herbarium at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, 1866–90; keeper of the herbarium, 1890–9. Lectured on botany at the London Hospital Medical School, 1869–81, and at the Chelsea Physic Garden, 1882–96. Contributed to colonial floras. Authority on ferns. FRS 1878.
