Scottish university principal. BA, Oxford (Balliol), 1849; fellow, Oriel, 1849–60. Examiner of candidates for the Indian Civil Service from 1855. Travelled to Madras in 1859. Professor of history and political economy, Elphinstone Institution, from 1860; vice-chancellor, University of Bombay, 1863–8. Principal, University of Edinburgh, 1868–84. Succeeded to the baronetcy in 1856.
