Samuel Galton
1753–1832
Gun maker and local politician. Partner in the firm of Farmers and Galton, 1776. In 1796, disowned by the Birmingham Quakers for profiting from war and slavery, but continued to worship at the Bull Street Meeting House. Established a bank in 1804. Joined the Lunar Society around 1781 and was the society’s longest serving member; purchased the society’s library in 1813, when it disbanded. Active in several areas of natural philosophy and natural history; an active promoter of the Midlands canal network. Known in his family as Samuel John to distinguish him from his father, Samuel Galton (1720–99). Father of Samuel Tertius Galton.
