Celtic scholar. BA, Oxford, 1869; fellow of Merton College, Oxford, 1869. Honorary fellow, Jesus College, Oxford, 1877–81; fellow and bursar, 1881; principal, 1895. Professor of Celtic, Oxford, 1877. His principal interest was Celtic and Welsh philology, but he also worked on ethnology, archaeology, and the history of religion.
