Henry Bryant

1820–67

American physician and naturalist. MD 1843. Practised in France and Algeria and briefly in the United States until 1847, when he abandoned medicine because of ill health and turned to natural history, especially ornithology. Served as surgeon in the Twentieth Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers in the American Civil War, and took charge of Lincoln Hospital. Resigned his commission because of ill health before the end of the war and went abroad. Bought the La Fresnaye collection of birds, including 9000 specimens, in France, and presented it to the Boston Society of Natural History.
