My Dear Sir

If you have no particular engagement and feel inclined for an hour’s conversation, it would give me great pleasure to call upon you between 11 & 12 on Wednesday next.—2 If you will not be at home perhaps you will be so good as to send me a line to 7 Park St, Grosvenor Square,3 to save my coming in vain, as I have a good deal to do.— If I do not hear, I will come always supposing my health permits, which renders all my engagements rather uncertain.

The letter is a copy made for Francis Darwin. It is on paper bearing the Edinburgh address of Robert Chambers and is endorsed ‘R Chambers’ in Francis Darwin’s hand. The copyist wrote ‘(Feb. 28, 1847)’ after ‘Sunday’.

CD sought the interview in order to learn about a recent criticism of his Glen Roy theory by David Milne (see letter to Charles Lyell, [7 March 1847]).

Erasmus Alvey Darwin’s house. CD usually broke the journey from Shrewsbury to Down in London.
