Darwin Correspondence Project

To Charles Lyell   28 June [1873]1

Down Beckenham Kent

June 28

My dear Lyell

I am greatly obliged to you for having sent me the extract from the American paper.2 How beautiful and true it is, & how well expressed.

It is delightful to see a noble character so well appreciated in a distant land. Again I thank you, and hope that you are pretty well.

Believe me | Your affectionate old pupil | Charles Darwin

Footnotes

The year has been supplied by the copyist.
The extract has not been found. It probably referred to Lyell’s wife, Mary Elizabeth, who died on 24 April 1873. The copyist has written on the letter ‘after Lady Lyell’s death’.

Summary

Thanks for the extract from the American paper.
