[Mr H. P. Lee (letter Jan. 17, 1873) describes a lateral shake of the index finger or of the whole hand as a common sign of negation in Japan.]

[Mr H. P. Lee (letter Jan. 17, 1873) has observed that the intelligent Chinese brought up from boyhood as servants of Europeans blush readily and profusely, e.g. on being bantered by their masters on their personal appearance.]
