Footnotes
The date is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter to William Turner, 28 March [1871].
These changes were not made until the second edition of Descent, published in 1874. The change of ‘Elaphus’ to ‘Elephas’ was not made. Cervus elaphus is now considered the correct spelling. A note appears in the errata to the first printing (beginning of second volume) that ‘elaphus’ should read ‘elephas’, but the change was not made in any other printings. A note on this letter, not in CD’s hand, reads, ‘Encyc Mam has Elaphus so has Linnæus’.
