To H. B. Jones   3 August [1870]1

Down. | Beckenham | Kent. S.E.

Aug. 3d

My dear Dr Bence Jones

I must thank you cordially for your very kind invitation;2 but my stomach, not withstanding all your good aid, is too diabolical to allow me to visit anywhere except at a very few of my nearest relations, where I can behave as I like. We shall, also, start soon for a visit to my son.—3 If it had been possible I shd thoroughily have enjoyed accepting your kindness.— Your letter has been an immense relief to me; but I will be careful & try & not work too hard.

Yours very gratefully | Ch. Darwin

Footnotes

The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter from H. B. Jones, 2 August 1870.
CD, with Emma Darwin and Leonard Darwin, visited William Erasmus Darwin in Southampton from 13 to 26 August 1870 (Emma Darwin’s diary (DAR 242), CD’s ‘Journal’ (Appendix II)).

Summary

Despite HBJ’s good aid, CD’s stomach will not permit a visit.
