Footnotes

An address CD never used. This letter is either a copy made by an inaccurate copyist who interpolated details or a forged CD letter.
If this is a copy of a genuine CD letter then ‘Hooker’ must be a mistranscription. CD would not have addressed William Jackson Hooker so familiarly, and his son, Joseph Dalton Hooker, had not yet returned from the Erebus voyage. The addressee was possibly Leonard Horner, who would have been interested in the notes on volcanic islands. CD worked on Volcanic islands during 1843 (see ‘Journal’; Correspondence vol. 2, Appendix II).
