My Dear Sir

I enclose my note of hand at 4 Mo’s from Mar 2. for £420 " as agreed.2 I trust it will reach you safely—

The son of Mr Clowes our Printer—a gentleman educated at Eton & Oxford is to be ballotted for at the Athenæum next Monday.3 I do not suppose you venture out at night, but if you think fit to speak to friends on Mr W Clowes behalf I venture to think he is not undeserving—

The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter to John Murray, 6 March 1868.
Murray refers to William Charles Knight Clowes, whose father was George Clowes, one of the partners in the firm of William Clowes and Sons. W. C. K. Clowes is listed as a member of the Athenaeum Club from 1868. CD had been a member since 1838 (Waugh [1888]).
