Darwin Correspondence Project

To H. J. Slack   2 December [1867]1

Down. | Bromley. | Kent. S.E.

Dec 2

Dear Sir

I thank you for your obliging note.2 I am sorry to say that from my health not being strong & from having much to do I have made it a rule not to write in periodicals however valuable & eminent they may be.3

I thank you also for your communication with respect to the Microscopical Soc, which I will not forget, but it is not probable that I shall for some time attend to minute structure.4

I beg leave to remain | Dear Sir | Yours faithfully | Ch. Darwin.

Footnotes

The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter from H. J. Slack, 30 November 1867 (Correspondence vol. 15).
Slack had asked CD to contribute to the Intellectual Observer, a popular science periodical that Slack edited.
Slack, who was secretary of the Royal Microscopical Society, had also informed CD that the society would appreciate any paper ‘on points of minute structure’ (Correspondence vol. 15, letter from H. J. Slack, 30 November 1867). In the event, CD never contributed an article.

Summary

Explains that he has made it a rule not to write for periodicals, however eminent.
