Verehrtester Herr!

Aus Ihren werthen Zeilen vom 30 October ersah ich gerne dass Ihnen Herr Prof. Carus in Leipzig als Uebersetzer Ihres Buches angenehm ist.2

Derselbe hat mir bereits einen Theil des Manuscriptes gesandt und ist solches schon in die Druckerei gegeben worden; ich werde veranlassen dass der Druck möglichst beschleunigt wird und werde das Vergnügen haben Ihnen die Bogen nach und nach, wie sie fertig werden zu übersenden.

Ich habe heute noch eine Bitte an Sie, verehrtester Herr; auf eine Anfrage bei Williams & Norgate wegen eines etwa vorhandenen Bildes von Ihnen, sofern es noch ein besseres gebe als jenes welches ich zu der 2t. deutschen Auflage nach einer Photographie machen ließ, haben mich diese Herren noch ohne Antwort gelassen;3 ich beabsichtigte nehmlich für die 3t Auflage das Porträt in Stahlstich zu bringen, wenn ich ein gutes Original davon haben könnte; nun möchte ich Sie selbst bitten, mir zu sagen ob die Photographie der 2t Aufl. gut ist, oder ob Sie eine bessere in einer Copie mir dafür geben könnten.4

In der Hoffnung dass der so kalte Winter dieses Jahres Ihrer Gesundheit nicht nachtheilig gewesen seie bin ich mit aller Hochachtung | Ihr ergebenster | E Schweizerbart5

vor einigen Tagen hatten wir 25o Kälte, heute 9o Wärme (Réaumür)6

In his business communications, C. F. Schweizerbart continued to use the signature of his uncle, Wilhelm Emanuel Schweizerbart, from whom he had purchased the publishing firm in 1841 (Jubiläums-Katalog, pp. x–xi).

Schweizerbart gives the temperatures based on the Réaumur thermometer scale, which has the freezing-point of water at 0o, and the boiling-point at 80o. The approximate equivalents in Celsius would be –31o centigrade and 11o centigrade.

Most honoured Sir!

I was glad to see from your kind lines of 30 October that having Prof. Carus as translator of your book is agreeable to you.2

He has already sent me a part of the manuscript and this has been sent to the printers. I will arrange for the printing to be done as quickly as possible and I shall be pleased to send you the proofs as and when they become ready.

Today I have another request for you, most honoured Sir; I asked Williams & Norgate about the possible availability of a picture of you, should one exist that is better than the one I had made from a photograph for the 2d. German edition, but these gentlemen have as yet left me without an answer.3 I had in mind, you see, to get a steel engraved portrait for the 3d edition if I could find a good original. Now, could I ask you to tell me whether the photograph in the 2d edition is a good one or whether you could send me a copy of a better one.4

In the hope that this year’s very cold winter has not impaired your health, I am with the highest esteem | your most devoted | E Schweizerbart5

a few days ago we had 25o frost, today 9o warmth (Réaumur)6
