Darwin Correspondence Project

To Charles Lovegrove?   16 December [1866?]1

Down Kent

December 16

I beg leave to acknowledge & thank you & Mrs. Love2 for your very kind subscription of Emma3 and I. 2/2/[0] to the Down [Coal & Clothing] Club.4

Footnotes

The identity of the recipient is conjectured from CD’s Down Coal and Clothing Club account book (Down House MS). The only year in which a contribution is listed from both ‘C. Lovegrove’ and ‘Mrs Lovegrove’ is 1866. The original letter is complete and is one page long.
Possibly a reference to Emma Darwin, although the transcription in the sale catalogue appears to be flawed.
CD recorded a payment of £2 2s. from ‘C. Lovegrove’ and ‘Mrs Lovegrove’ in his Down Coal and Clothing Club account book (Down House MS).

Summary

Acknowledges a subscription to the Down [Coal and Clothing] Club.
