Darwin Correspondence Project

From Daniel Hanbury   1 December 1866

Plough Court, Lombard Street | E.C.

1 Dec. 1866.

Dear Sir

Some months ago you presented to the Linnean Society a communication (just now printed) from a certain Fritz Müller of Desterro in Brazil.1

Will you tell me whether this gentleman is still in that locality, and whether being so, I might address him for information on one or two pharmacological matters?2

I do not know in which province Desterro is situated.3 The gazetteer I have at hand does not mention it. Believe me to remain | Yours faithfully

Danl Hanbury.

C. Darwin Esq.

Footnotes

The reference is to Fritz Müller’s ‘Notes on some climbing plants near Desterro, in south Brazil’ (F. Müller 1865b; see also letter to Fritz Müller, 23 August [1866] and n. 8). The paper is also published in Correspondence vol. 13 as the letter from Fritz Müller, [12 and 31 August, and 10 October 1865].
Much of Hanbury’s research focused on the botanical origin of drugs (see Ince ed. 1876, p. 496).
Destêrro (now Florianópolis) was located on Santa Catarina Island in the province (now state) of Santa Catarina, Brazil (Columbia gazetteer of the world).
