Darwin Correspondence Project

From Hermann Kindt   17 October 1865

Bampton, Penrith

17 October ’65.

Sir,

You may, perhaps, remember your kindly complying with a wish of mine respecting an autograph of yours for a German friend;1 and I should feel greatly indebted to you if you would grant me a similar request, i.e. this time for publicity. I have forwarded to you a journal, which I beg you will not take the trouble of returning, for which I should be happy to have a page in your handwriting for a facsimile reproduction.2 In case you will kindly comply with my wish, will you please to extract a longer passage from your “Origin of Species”, written on a piece of paper in the size of a page of our publication and signed with your esteemed name. As the journal also appears on the Continent, your numerous friends there would be much pleased to see your handwriting thus reproduced. You will also oblige me by looking over the enclosed biographical notice intended for a similar purpose and by altering dates and such passages as you cannot approve of.3

I shall receive your kind answer and favour with the warmest gratitude, and ever remain, with the expression of greatest admiration for your enlightening works, | Sir, | your’s very faithfully | Hermann Kindt

Charles Darwin Esq. | M.A., F.R.S., etc

Footnotes

Kindt had requested CD’s autograph, together with a few lines of his handwriting, for an unnamed German friend. CD sent his signature and copied the last sentence of Origin (see Correspondence vol. 12, letter from Hermann Kindt, 16 September 1864, and letter to Hermann Kindt, 17 September 1864).
Kindt refers to the Autographic Mirror (L’Autographe Cosmopolite). The journal was a bilingual publication containing facsimile reproductions of letters and other documents by prominent people, together with biographical sketches of the authors. No copy of this journal has been found in the Darwin Pamphlet Collection–CUL, the Darwin Library–CUL, or the Darwin Library–Down. For the handwritten passage CD sent, see Correspondence vol. 30, Supplement, letter to Hermann Kindt, [18–22 October 1865].
For the passage as published, see the letter from Hermann Kindt, 23 October 1865, n. 2; the biographical notice is in the Autographic Mirror 3 (1865): 82–3.
