The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter from W. H. Flower, 9 May 1863 (Correspondence vol. 11).
According to CD’s Classed account book (Down House MS), CD made a payment of 17s. for the photographs on 25 May 1863.
Flower had sent CD photographs of the niata ox skull at the Hunterian Museum and CD had sent these to Armand de Quatrefages (see Correspondence vol. 11, letter from W. H. Flower, 9 May 1863, and letter to Armand de Quatrefages, 14 May [1863]). Quatrefages acknowledged receipt of the photographs in his letter of 19 May [1863] (ibid.).
Summary
