The identity of the correspondent is suggested by the catalogue description, which states that CD was ‘returning thanks for the gift of his correspondent’s treatise on Coelenterata’. There is a copy of Greene’s Manual of the sub-kingdom Cœlenterata (the second part of Greene 1859–61) in the Darwin Library–Down.
The year is established by the year of publication of the volume mentioned in the letter (see n. 1, above).
