The publication of The three barriers ([Rorison] 1861) was announced in Publishers’ Circular, 15 August 1861, p. 374. CD later referred to the book as ‘a theological hash of old abuse of me’ (see Correspondence vol. 9, letter to T. H. Huxley, 31 October [1861] and nn. 2 and 3).
