Darwin Correspondence Project

To Wilhelm Bernhard Rudolph Hadrian Dunker   5 April [1851]

Down Farnborough Kent

April 5th.

Dear Sir

At last I am able to return you your valuable specimens, & those belonging to Mess. Roemer Philippi & Koch.1 Pray accept my most cordial thanks for your great kindness & communicate the same to the above three distinguished naturalists. When you return the specimens, will you be so good as to present each of the above gentlemen with a copy of my small Monograph.2 —with which I am not well satisfied, though I have done it as well as I could.—

Pray believe me with much respect, | Yours much obliged | C. Darwin

Footnotes

Friedrich Adolph Roemer, Rudolph Amandus Philippi, and Friedrich Karl Ludwig Koch. In Fossil Cirripedia (1851): vi, CD wrote: ‘Having applied to Professor W. Dunker, of Cassel, for some of the species described by various German authors, he not only sent me many specimens out of his own collection, but procured from Messrs. Roemer, Koch, and Philippi, other specimens of great value; and to these most distinguished naturalists I beg to return my very sincere thanks.’
This is the first mention of published copies of Fossil Cirripedia (1851) being available. The letter has a covering note to Dunker from John Morris, dated 22 April, listing the contents of the parcel being sent to Dunker. It includes ‘4 Copies of Mr. Darwin’s Work’.
