I told Prof: Bonney that I was sure the story was apocryphal but I thought it worrth while sending on; for you to send him a card to say it was so.2 I hope your cold is better. G. is just off & is brisk.3 He has a lovely day.

The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter from T. G. Bonney, 5 February 1882.
Thomas George Bonney had asked William Erasmus Darwin to confirm that an account of CD’s reaction to a supposed discovery of organic structures in meteorites by Otto Hahn was apocryphal (see letter from T. G. Bonney to W. E. Darwin, [before 2 February 1882]). For CD’s reaction to Hahn’s work, see Correspondence vol. 28, letter to Otto Hahn, 20 December 1880.
George Howard Darwin had just sailed from Southampton for Jamaica; he arrived in Jamaica at St Thomas on 15 February 1882 (letter from Emma Darwin to G. H. Darwin, [20 February 1882] (DAR 210.3: 40)).
