Sir Joseph Hooker having reported to this office that you have offered to provide funds for the preparation in the Royal Gardens, Kew, of a new edition of Steudel’s Nomenclator, I am directed by the First Commissioner of Her Majesty’s Works, &c, to convey to you the thanks of this Department for your liberality and public spirit in the matter, and to express to you his appreciation of the compliment paid to the Kew Establishment in—entrusting it with the supervision of the work.1

This letter was enclosed with the letter from J. D. Hooker, 19 January 1882. CD had arranged with Joseph Dalton Hooker to pay £250 a year for a new catalogue of all known plants; the previous such work was by Ernst Gottlieb Steudel (Steudel 1841; see letter from J. D. Hooker, 12 January 1882 and n. 1). The first commissioner of works was George John Shaw-Lefevre.
