My dear Sir

I regret extremely that I left home yesterday before the arrival of your note (which was forwarded to me here) & that I do not return home for 3 weeks.2

On some future occasion, I hope to have the pleasure of seeing you at Down,3 & with all good wishes & much respect, I remain | My dear Sir, Yours very faithfully | Charles Darwin

The Darwins visited family in Surrey and Staffordshire between 7 and 22 August 1878 (CD’s ‘Journal’ (Appendix II)).
In the event, De Vries visited CD on 14 August 1878, while CD was staying at Abinger, Surrey (Emma Darwin’s diary (DAR 242)).

Summary

Regrets he cannot receive HdeV at Down, because he has just left home.
