Darwin Correspondence Project

To John Higgins   28 February [1848]

Down Farnborough Kent

Feb 28th

My dear Sir

I have had a letter from Mr. Mason, requesting me as a favour to pay my subscription half-yearly & at the dates of the 16th of Feb. & 16th of August.—1 Would you kindly do this for me.— Though on reflexion, I do not see, how you can earlier than Lady Day & Michaelmas.2 Perhaps you will be so good as to pay as soon as you receive the Rent & then it will be somewhere near the dates requested.

I hope that you will excuse this trouble & believe me, My dear Sir | Yours very faithfully | C. Darwin

You can, if you like keep back 5£ next Lady Day & thus pay as Mr Mason requests.—

Footnotes

CD subscribed £5 each year for the support of Beesby School (see CD’s Account Book and Investment Book (Down House MSS)). Henry Payne Mason, rector of Beesby, was presumably responsible for collecting the subscriptions to Beesby School.
March 25, the day of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, and 10 October, which were two of the traditional ‘quarter-days’ of the business year, when rents were paid.

Summary

Arranges to pay subscription on 15 Feb and 16 Aug as requested by Mr Mason.
