Darwin Correspondence Project

To John Forbes Royle   [12 April – 17 May 1847]1

Down Farnborough | Kent

Monday

Dear Royle

I will send our village carrier next Thursday forenoon to call for the Books if that will suit you & I do not hear to the contrary. I will send an empty Box, which is, I think, the safest way of carrying them. I am aware that to borrow a book is at most times a cool request,, but I had no idea, when I asked you, how rare a book the Agricult & Hort. Journal was,2 & I assure you that I thoroughily appreciate your kindness in lending them me. I have long wished to look through some of the papers— I daresay I shall able to get through all the vols in a fortnight & they shall then be carefully returned.

I hope & believe that I have a really good character for returning Books & I am sure I have tryed many of my friends sufficiently.—

With very many thanks, believe me dear Royle. Yours sincerely | C. Darwin

Footnotes

Journal of the Agricultural and Horticultural Society of India. Royle had lived in India from 1819 to 1837, and during the last fifteen years of that period he was superintendent of the botanic garden at Saharanpur. In his reading notebook, CD noted that he had finished reading the first volume of the Transactions of the Agricultural and Horticultural Society of India on 13 June 1847 (DAR 119; Correspondence vol. 4, Appendix IV), but Royle was unable to send his copies of the Journal, Proceedings and the Transactions until August (see letter to J. F. Royle, [16 April – 21 May 1847], and letter to J. F. Royle, 14 August [1847], n. 1).
