Darwin Correspondence Project

To Ernst Haeckel   16 February 1877

Down, | Beckenham, Kent. | Railway Station | Orpington. S.E.R.

Feb. 16— 1877

My dear Häckel

The album has just arrived quite safe.—1 It is most superb. It is by far the greatest honour which I have ever received, & my satisfaction has been greatly enhanced by your most kind letter of Feb. 9th together with your gift of the your Gastræa theory.2 The album contains some of the most highly honoured names in Germany, & your own photograph is wonderfully good.— I thank you all from my heart.— I have written by this post to Herr Rade, & I hope he will somehow manage to thank all my generous friends.3

Farewell | Yours gratefully | Ch. Darwin

I hope that you will have successful work in the Mediterranean.—4
