The month and year are established by the postmark and by the relationship between this letter and the letter to Asa Gray, 28 October 1876.
CD was sending Gray proof-sheets of Cross and self fertilisation (letter to Asa Gray, 28 October 1876). Gray had asked for them to be sent within thirty days in his letter of 12 October 1876; this postcard was franked in New York on 15 November (as well as in Beckenham on 4 November).
