CD was writing a letter on sexual selection in monkeys for Nature; the letter discussed a two-part article on the mandrill (Cynocephalus mormon, a synonym of Mandrillus sphinx) in Zoologische Garten (Fischer 1876a; see letter to Francis Darwin, 20 September [1876] and n. 3). Part 1 of Fischer 1876a was published in April 1876, pp. 116–27; part 2 in June 1876, pp. 174–9.
