I am very much obliged for your kind present of the new edition of Brehm’s Thier leben, The illustrations are admirable; but it wd be superfluous in me to express any opinion on this work, as I have plainly shewn in my Descent of Man how much I have profited by it, & how much I value it.1

The publisher had evidently sent CD the first volume of the second edition of Alfred Edmund Brehm’s Thierleben (Brehm et al. 1876–9). There are nine volumes of the ten-volume work in the Darwin Library–Down (the missing volume is vol. II, part 1).
