Darwin Correspondence Project

From J. H. Gilbert   6 January 1876

Harpenden, St. Albans

Jany. 6, 1876

Dear Sir

I thank you very much for the copy of your book on “Insectivorous Plants” which I have received through Mr. Murray.1 At present I have only been able to glance at the Table of Contents, and turn over a few of the leaves, but have seen enough to surprise me at the amount of experimental observation involved, and to assure me that I shall make further acquaintance with the book with the greatest interest.

I am, My Dear Sir, | Your’s sincerely | J. H. Gilbert.

Charles Darwin Esqre &c. &c. &c.

Footnotes

CD had offered to send Gilbert a copy of Insectivorous plants after Gilbert lent him tables giving the results of experiments carried out at the agricultural station at Rothamsted on the effects of different manures on permanent meadow land (see Correspondence vol. 23, letter from J. H. Gilbert, 31 December 1875 and n. 1). John Murray was CD’s publisher.
