Appointed to the college living at Cholderton, Wiltshire, 1847. Assistant commissioner to the royal commission on education, 1858. Rector of Ufton Nervet, Berkshire, 1860. A commissioner on education in North America, 1865. Bishop of Manchester, 1870. Member of the governing bodies of Manchester and Shrewsbury grammar schools and of Owens College, visitor of the high school for girls and of the commercial school, and president of the College for Women.
