William Francis Cowper-Temple, Baron Mount-Temple

1811–88

Politician. Educated at Eton College. Entered the Royal Horse Guards, 1827; brevet major, 1852. MP for Hertford, 1835–68; for South Hampshire, 1868–80. Lord of the Admiralty, 1846–55. President of the Board of Health. Commissioner of works, 1860–66. Instrumental in establishing state-funded, non-denominational schools. Created Baron Mount-Temple, 1880.
