John Croumbie Brown

1808–95

Scottish clergyman and botanist. LL.D., University of Aberdeen, 1858. Served the London Missionary Society in St Petersburg, Russia, and then in Cape Town, 1844–8. Minister to a United Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen, 1849. Lecturer in botany, Joint Medical School, Aberdeen, 1853. Colonial botanist, 1863–6, attending particularly to agricultural problems; also chair of botany at the South Africa College, Cape Town. Returned to his Aberdeen ministry in 1866. Fellow of the Linnean Society of London, 1867.
