Alexander Macmillan

1818–96

Scottish publisher. Co-founder with his brother Daniel of the firm Macmillan & Co. in 1843. After moving the firm’s headquarters from Cambridge to London in the early 1860s, began commissioning textbooks on botany, chemistry, and geology for children in elementary schools.
