Theodore Minet Haultain
1817–1902
English-born New Zealand soldier and politician. Attended Sandhurst; served in India for ten years. Emigrated to New Zealand in 1849. Resigned from the army in 1857. Member of the New Zealand House of Representives, 1858–60. Organised a defence force after the outbreak of fighting at Taranaki in 1860, and served in the Waikato Militia, 1863–4. Organised the settlement of the militia on confiscated land. Resigned his commission in 1865. Minister of defence, 1865–9.
